The Beatryce Prophecy
by Kate DiCamillo, published 2021
“We hall all, in the end, be led to where we belong, We shall, in the end, find our way home.”
There is nothing more rewarding than finding a new children’s book by one’s favorite children’s book author. This is especially true of children’s books by Kate DiCamillo. She is one of the great contemporary writers for children. What I love about her books is that they are honest, thoughtful, and always intriguing. The newest book lives up to that and more.
I didn’t know what to expect with this book, but what I got was adventure, excitement, and a thoroughly lovable cast of heroes and heroines, along with some dastardly bad guys. Of course, the good guys triumph, or it’s not likely this book would have made it to my website… But they more than triumph. They bring a gender message that is helpful, as well as illuminate many qualities such as honesty, dispassion, and above all, loyalty.
I can’t recommend this book enough. I will add the caveat that it is not without a few uncomfortable moments that involve some killing. But the action is all off-stage, so to speak, and most nine-year-olds in today’s world have seen or read far worse. A great book for both boys and girls.
